Hey Paris...remember me?! I'm coming back to see you and I'm bringing 5 other people!!

It's time to head to Paris!  We were picked up by the most lovely man in a Mercedes van and were dropped off in Rennes, about 1 hr. drive from Dinan.  Unlike the other French train stations I have been in, this one is very modern.  No train mishaps this time...just a comfy 2.5 hr ride in 1st class to Paris, during which we read, chatted, and munched on snacks we had bought at the train station.

Ron was shy about busting out his new flat-cap...I think it looks great on him.  This one is light blue...now I think he needs to get a darker tweed on for fall/winter...start a collection!

A quick cab ride from Gare Montparnasse to our amazing apartment in the 3rd arrondissement.  This is the view from our balcony:

Here is the link to the apartment...it is hip and modern inside.  3 comfy bedrooms, a huge living room with a giant sectional sofa, lovely kitchen, in a well maintained Haussman building.  It's across the street from both a Monoprix (kind of like French Target with groceries, sundries, clothes, wine, etc) and a metro station (Remour-Sebastopol) right across the street.  There are tons of restaurants in all directions.  The location is really perfect! I highly recommend this apartment if you are traveling with a group!

We dropped our bags off in the apartment, but they were still cleaning it so we had some time to kill.  We walked a few blocks to Gary's favorite street in Paris, Rue Montorgueil.  This pedestrian only street is lined on both sides with restaurants, bakeries, cheese shops, produce shops, butchers, drugstores, and quaint little shops - everything you could want or need can be found on this street.  We popped into a little cafe for a jolt of caffeine.  It wasn't until after I snapped this photo, that I realized I captured the guy at the next table who kind of looks like Bryan (not as handsome though)!

I have had really good luck in the past using an app called The Fork to find good local restaurants, and I hit it out of the ballpark with the one I found for our first dinner in Paris.  It was a 2 block walk from our apartment, and was called Poulette...I would highly recommend it!  (Funny thing is, on our last day in Paris I was looking through things I had saved on Instagram, and I had actually saved a post about this restaurant, which I though was so pretty with the great Art Nouveau tile walls).  I have no idea what the history of this restaurant is, but the murals clearly are old, and are beverage themed.  I'm sure it has been a restaurant or bar for many many years! This iteration opened in 2013, but the tiles are much older than that so I'm guessing it has had several previous lives.

All the walls are totally covered in these amazing old tile murals!  I love these old Parisian zinc bars.  I didn't get a photo of the bar tender but he was great, shaking cocktails like crazy!  (and he had the biceps to show for all that shaking!) This super busy, very small (very loud) restaurant was totally full the whole time we were there...and he was shaking cocktail all evening, I'm really not sure how I managed to snap a photo with him missing!

For a country known more for wine than cocktails, we sure have found some beautiful cocktails!
This one is called a "Giny Germain", and it is one we made frequently during the pandemic when we (the 6 of us) worked our way through David Lebovitz's French beverage book called Drinking French.  It was fun to actually see it on a menu...and isn't it pretty?!

Ron had sea bass  (I told you he was on a quest to find the very best one!)

And that is a delicious lemon tart sitting in front of both Babette and me!  We were not the only ones who ate dessert... just the only ones who had been served when we asked the waiter for a photo!  Seriously, the food and drink was so good here, I whole-heartedly suggest visiting it next time you are in Paris.  I'm definitely going to add it to my list of restaurants I re-visit whenever I am in Paris!

Here we go again!! (subtitle: If we are traveling to Europe, of course Kathy is writing another blog!)

France... again ?!?  Well, let me explain... Two years ago we explored much of France with Gary's brother John and his wife Babette https://4huntsinfrance.blogspot.com ).  We spent one month and covered a lot of ground; our main stopping points were Amboise, Sarlat, Carcassonne, Collioure, Avignon, Annecy, Colmar, and Paris - spending 3-5 days in each town.  Now, if you were to plot those cities/towns out on a map, you would see that we were only in central, southern, and eastern France. So it only seems fitting that we round out our French explorations with another  trip to France, this time covering more of the western side of the country. And this time we are adding another brother and sister-in-law to the group. We have previously travelled to Europe twice with Ron and Lenore and had great fun traveling with them on a Mediterranean cruise/Barcelona/Istanbul and also Norway/Ireland/Scotland.  So now 3 Hunt brothers and their wives will be exploring Bordeaux, ...

Our first wrinkle!

And no, I'm not talking about facial wrinkles - although between the 6 of us seniors we do have just a few  of those! I'm talking about a transportation strike wrinkle!!  The French LOVE a strike so I guess we should be embracing the upcoming strike action as part of the "true" French experience!  Last week it was announced that there would be a one day transit strike on Sept. 10, and a one day nationwide strike on Sept. 18, backed by France's eight major unions...and if anybody loves a strike it is SNCF (the French national train company) so I'm pretty sure they will participate.  This announcement has left us all scrambling a bit.  John and Babette were set to arrive in Paris on Sept. 10, and we have already purchased train tickets for travel between Bordeaux and Dinan on Sept. 18.  One good thing about French strikes, they are required by law to announce exactly who will be striking 24 hours ahead of the called strike.  So far, we have heard talk of...

September 11-12 Travel day!

Here we go (or as the French say, "on y va"!  All that planning and the day is finally here!  We were picked up by Ron and Lenore and the chattiest driver you ever saw!  Tons of traffic getting to SFO and I was so glad we had built in "extra time" to get to the airport. We have flown French Bee several times to France.  If you are not familiar with this airline, it is a budget airline, prices can't be beat, but it is NOT fancy.  This time however, we opted to travel in the "Premium" section of the plane.  I wouldn't call it "1st class", but by budget airline criteria, its as close to 1st class as you can get! As soon as we walked into the International Terminal at SFO we headed to the Premier check-in counter and we were the 1st ones there, checked in super quickly and headed toward our gate.  We knew the airplane food would not be gluten-free for Gary so we opted to spend our time eating an early dinner at the Gott's Roadside Diner ...
